Johnny Lin (partner)

Johnny Lin with his multi-national background, Johnny Lin has been perfectly positioned for success in both the Asian and North American film worlds. Over the years, Lin has acquired rights to such critically acclaimed and successful films as THE FIGHTER, THE KING’S SPEECH, DEAR JOHN, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, THE EXPENDABLES, RAMBO 4, NEXT THREE DAYS, KICK ASS, RED, LIMITLESS, THE LINCOLN LAWYER, IRON LADY, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, THE HUNGER GAMES, India’s blockbuster 3 IDIOTS, and the entire MIRAMAR library, along with over 1,200 other films for Taiwan. Prior to establishing Filmula, Lin was a member of his father Jimmy Lin’s prolific distribution team, which distributed over 800 films in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.

Lin began his career working for his father Jimmy, a producer on Jet Li’s breakthrough film THE LEGEND, who introduced Laser Disc technology to the Pan-Asian market and later set up an output deal with New Line Cinema for distribution in Taiwan. During this time, Lin and his father distributed successful films such as THE WEDDING SINGER, WAG THE DOG, RUNAWAY BRIDE, THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, RUSH HOUR, the BLADE trilogy and SPAWN. This extensive distribution experience covered Pan-Asian regions.

Lin’s initial endeavor in filmmaking involved greenlighting the company’s production stake in HESHER, directed by Spencer Susser, which had its world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and starred Natalie Portman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rainn Wilson. His next film, ANOTHER HAPPY DAY starring Demi Moore, Kate Bosworth, Ellen Barkin and Thomas Haden Church, won the Sundance Film Festival’s annual Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. In addition, Lin’s 2011 slate included BERNIE, a comedy starring Jack Black and Matthew McConaughey, directed by Richard Linklater.

Lin’s recent producing efforts include the 2017 crime thriller AMERICAN MADE starring Tom Cruise, along with upcoming projects such as a television series adaptation of Maureen Callahan’s ‘90s-set fashion book CHAMPAGNE SUPERNOVAS, a film adaptation of undercover agent Edward Follis’ memoir THE DARK ART: MY UNDERCOVER LIFE IN NARCO-TERRORISM, a holiday action film entitled ESCAPE FROM THE NORTH POLE, and a feature film adaptation of James L. Swanson’s upcoming book LION IN WINTER, which is based on the true story of America’s most prolific Chicago Outfit syndicate mob boss.

Filmula and Lin will team up with New Republic Pictures and Brian Oliver (HACKSAW RIDGE) on several projects, including the sci-fi thriller RISE; horror film SACRIFICE; an updated version of the 1978 cult favorite mission movie, THE WILD GEESE; and Mexican Revolution thriller THE CREED OF VIOLENCE, which Variety announced in a story covering New Republic’s overall deal with Paramount.

Lin also completed the photography program at UCLA with highest distinction honors.
